Error -41 while copying files

WOW… what gives… error central today.
While copying files from one external drive to another, I kept getting Error -41 pop up
A little research later and the fix is….

Type:
sudo chmod -RN
followed by a space into the Terminal window, and drag the drive into the Terminal before running the command.

Yes folks that is for the Mac.

Mac Mini Server (DNS)

Well what a stupid mistake, I have spent a while trying to figure out why my lab mac would not connect to my lab mac mini server.
Simple really, don’t remove the server from your Airport Extreme as a DNS server.
The tell tail was that in “System Preferences/Accounts/Login Options/Network Account Server” the server will only appear as server.local rather than the FQDN you specify in other words it is using the Bonjour name rather than the FQDN because it obviously has no records to it from anywhere else.
Lesson for the day. Don’t screw with Mac OSX Server DNS or it will screw with you

New toys on the way, for the Jeep

New toys are on the way for the Jeep, a poster “JeepMangler” on AusJeepOffroad helped clarified my priorities for me.

There is no point having a winch if you can’t use it. Using a winch cable wrapped around a tree will ringbark it, in effect killing it. Additionally there are times when just a snatch-strap will suffice.

So to keep things all neat and tidy, I laid out some dough for an ARB Winch Pack.

The pack includes…

Winch extension strap
Tree Protector
Snatch-strap
2 x D shackles
Snatchblock
Recovery damper

I also picked up two replacement H4 driving lights made by IPF. These will apparently slot straight in.

iPad has arrived

After waiting an eternity I have finally received my iPad. Wow, I am truly impressed with this beast. It is quick and vivid. Just a few observations… Pixel doubling is while a good idea for salvaging some iPhone apps, it does not compare with truly native iPad apps. The extra real-estate given by the iPad is definitely something that I am enjoying with apps like… The Australian newspaper app. WordPress. And one of my favorites Zinio. The ultimate newsstand at home.

Of the things I truly dislike…

No easy camera tethering.

Even though there is a USB camera adaptor, as far as I am aware I can not thither the camera to the iPad.

No iPhone tethering for 3G

Bluetooth on both devices and you are allowed to tether an iPhone to a computer but not an iPad, this is just truly sad.

Micro Flight

So things have been quite on the site recently. Well that would be because I have been researching and purchasing a model helicopter.

The wife bought me a great little “toy” for christmas which has me hooked. She knew that I always wanted to play with RC helicopters and found a cheap one for sale and thought it would be worth while even if I broke it or hated it.

The cheap co-axial toy broke on first flight, but determined to get it working, I repaired it and got airbourne.

Before long I was outside smacking into things and loosing it over the fence, fully unaware that any breaze would carry it away as the toys arn’t anywhere near capable enough to deal with uneven air. Still I was hooked.

So onto the web and time to start looking for something a bit more “real”

I have settled on an e-flite Blade mSR rtf, which I am still waiting on, but I will post my experiences as soon as I can. Till then here is a link and photo of the weapon of choice.

Packet Tracer.. Legal or Not?

Rather than a simple post, I thought I would put a question out there… Rather a few questions.

Is Cisco’s Packet Tracer application allowed to be used by people outside the academy?

If not…

Why put a product out there which would help many people get hooked or at least get a better understanding of their product range?

Or if so…

Where is available as a download other than file sharing sites?

The Cisco Gateway

In order to help people make decisions regarding which router to get, I have decided to publish the research i did while looking at the plethora of routers. That is why there is now the Cisco gateway on my pages on the right of the page.

I want that rack… (Update.1)

Well I have got back a quote on the rack with an added bonus. As much as I like to buy local where ever possible, the fact remains that this is not my business (yet, if ever) thus I want to get things for as little as possible, so I was surprised when the quote came back with a cheaper imported rack slightly higher at 32RU.

I am waiting on a picture, which I will post when I get a reply… stay tuned folks
